The Scarlet Empire had been eating away at King Jasper's armies for ages. During the previous summer and spring, General Despair had ground King Jasper's resources away with his relentless attacks. His legions roamed virtually without resistance throughout the land. While Jasper's castle was invincible, the Eternal Kingdom was most certainly not. Lord Serpent, his generals, and his legions seemed poised to eliminate King Jasper'army once and for all in their next spring campaign.

Though there were few areas in which King Jasper had the resources to beat back the Scarlet advance, he did have an opportunity to reach out to the harried refugees east of Eternal. It would be far from the glorious campaigns of the past, when Prince Lamb led his band of rebels throughout the enemy territory, removing Scarlet legionnaires and their centurions. Still, it was all that could be done considering the circumstances.

It was here, at the outskirts of King Jasper's kingdom, that Lord Comfort saw fit to instruct a simple soldier named Young in the delicate art of defense. Young had very little experience, but Lord Comfort had earmarked his life for the kingdom. He had called him to a battle that would someday come. This battle would be a terrible fearsome thing. Only the best leader in the entire army would be able to lead his warriors through it. This leader would be Young.
