Introduction to The Footsoldier Chronicles:
Welcome to
the Red River
Century! You are about to embark on a great adventure, whether it be with a small group or as an individual. Further on down,
I’ll have a few notes for both, but for now, we’ll discuss the broad spectrum.
First of all,
the important thing is to realize your goals in this study. We’re not trying to recapture the man within during this
study. I have no doubt that you can find numerous books on that particular subject. What I want you to see in this study is
that you are a warrior. Stop trying to find the warrior within and accept the fact that you simply are a warrior, whether
you want to be or not. So while I certainly want you to develop goals of your own and/or as a group, I want you to adopt this
one goal: To become the soldier you are.
Kind of a
tricky statement, isn’t it? Here’s the basic explanation-You are a soldier in Christ’s Army. Deal with that
statement in any way you need to, and then become that soldier. What soldier exactly? The soldier in Ephesians chapter six.
Take a moment to look at him right quick before we move on. I didn’t mention Paul, Peter, Timothy, John, or any other
“soldier” in Christ. Why? Because Paul was Paul, Peter was Peter, and so on. The soldier in Ephesians six is the
base model. While I don’t want you to be just a run of the mill soldier (I don’t want to be a run of the mill
soldier either…I promise), I do want you to start there. Imagine for just a moment how stoic he must be standing there,
ready against the odds. The entire barbaric army undoubtedly facing him, and yet he does not run. He does not move. He makes
his goal to stand there; to be the soldier he is.
This is defensive
warfare. Christ leads the offensives, meaning that he grows the seeds. The Holy Spirit is the one who lords over the harvest.
We are the defensive posture. We are the laborers in that field. We are the support staff…the infantry, if you will.
We are those who march with our general. That is the soldier I am.
When I joined
the US Navy in 1996, I became a sailor, just not quite that fast. Even though I had sworn in on 23 May, 1996, I had not become
the sailor that my oath said I was. I graduated as that sailor 31 July, 1996. You are in the same position. Accepting Christ
places you at the point of having just taken the oath. Now it is time to become the solider you are.
Take a moment
to read over the Ephesians description of the soldier again and then make up some goals for you. Remember: your first goal
is to become the soldier you are.
